Quick Answer: How Do You Start Fishing?

  1. Open the Skill Window with K.
  2. Select the Life Skill tab.
  3. Choose Fishing and use Get Quest to begin I want to learn Fishing.
  4. Follow the active quest text before attempting to grind proficiency.
  5. After unlocking the skill, cast into usable water and wait for a bite.

If you cannot fish, first confirm that you accepted and completed the Fishing unlock objective. Standing beside water without the unlocked life skill is not enough.

Where Can You Fish Early?

Spawn Grounds is a convenient verified starting point because it is safe and its official map data lists three catches:

CatchBase share listed for Spawn Grounds
Clam62.5%
Shrimp21.9%
Trout15.6%

These percentages describe the official map listing checked on the date below. Proficiency and future patches may affect your actual results.

For another fishing location, open the World Map with M, type the fish name into the search bar and press Enter. The map sidebar will show areas containing that resource. Hovering over a gathering material in the sidebar displays its listed base chance.

How Fishing Proficiency Works

Fishing levels up to 99. Higher proficiency can hook rarer fish and produce larger catches. The official Fishing reference also states that fish award five times the gathering EXP of herbs or ore, so individual catches carry more gathering experience even when the activity itself feels slower.

Use this progression loop:

  1. Fish in safe water with catches appropriate for your current proficiency.
  2. Keep enough inventory space for repeated catches.
  3. Search the World Map for the next fish required by a quest or recipe.
  4. Use useful fish in Cooking or retain them for objectives.
  5. Move locations when the next resource, quest or proficiency target calls for it.

How to Find Clams, Shrimp or Trout

Use the exact resource name in World Map search. If the search returns Spawn Grounds, select it and inspect its resource list before travelling elsewhere.

  • Clam: the most common of the three listed Spawn Grounds catches.
  • Shrimp: less common than Clam at Spawn Grounds.
  • Trout: the least common of the three listed there.

Do not assume a missing catch means the location is wrong after only a few casts. Check the listed base chance, your unlock status and whether you are using a valid fishing spot.

Searching for a specific fish? Chomper is a verified consumable fish example: the official item page says it heals 7 HP and is found in Outskirts Pond.

Fishing for Leveling or Money

Fishing is useful when its catches support a quest, Cooking recipe or current Auction House demand. It is not automatically the best currency method on every server.

Before selling fish:

  • Check whether you need them for an active quest.
  • Check current Auction House history and listings.
  • Compare the raw fish value with any Cooking use.
  • Keep rare catches until you understand their purpose.

Common Fishing Problems

The Fishing action does not work: verify that the life-skill quest is complete and that the water is an usable fishing area.

I cannot find a specific fish: search its exact name on the World Map and inspect the resource list for each returned area.

I keep catching the common fish: rarer results naturally take more attempts; higher proficiency improves access to rarer fish and bigger catches.

My inventory fills too quickly: store unrelated materials before starting a long fishing session.
