Soul's Remnant Damage Balance: What It Does & How It Works

Quick answer

Damage Balance raises the lower end of your damage range, making weak hits less weak and increasing average DPS without directly raising the maximum roll.

What Is Damage Balance?

Damage Balance raises the lower end of the damage range used when your hit is calculated. It makes low rolls stronger and therefore improves average damage and consistency.

It is not the same as adding a fixed amount to every hit, increasing critical-hit chance, or directly raising the maximum possible roll. Think of it as narrowing the distance between an unlucky hit and a strong hit.

Simple Example

Imagine a skill can produce a range of damage values. Adding Damage Balance pushes the weak end of that range upward. Your best hit may remain similar, but fewer attacks land near the original minimum.

The current public sources do not provide one universal conversion formula that should be applied to every skill. Scaling, equipment, target defense and other modifiers still matter, so test the stat with the in-game DPS meter or repeated attacks against the same target.

Where Does Damage Balance Come From?

Current official Wiki data documents Damage Balance in several systems:

  • Equipment Echoes: Damage Balance can appear as an Echo line. The official Echo page currently highlights it as a strong DPS line on bags.
  • Companion: This Range/Magic party buff increases Accuracy and Damage Balance for the user and nearby allies while the hawk is active.
  • Equipment and progression bonuses: Player Stats lists Damage Balance among non-assignable attributes obtained from equipment or other systems rather than direct stat-point allocation.

The exact value and best source can change with patches and item level. Compare the live tooltip before replacing a good equipment line.

Damage Balance vs Other DPS Stats

StatMain job
Damage BalanceRaises the low end of the damage range for more consistent hits
Bonus DamageAdds damage under its own post-calculation rules
Armor PenetrationReduces part of the target's defense
Critical Hit RateIncreases how often a hit becomes a critical hit
Attack SpeedReduces relevant skill cooldowns or increases use frequency
Main damage statImproves the scaling used by Melee, Range, Magic or Faith skills

These stats are not interchangeable. Damage Balance is most attractive when inconsistent low rolls are reducing real DPS; Armor Penetration depends more on the target, while Attack Speed depends on whether the skill belongs to the matching combat category.

Is Damage Balance Good?

It is a legitimate DPS stat because it improves weak rolls, but “best” depends on the item slot, item level, skill rotation and competing Echo lines. The official Wiki currently considers it especially valuable on bags, but Early Access balance can change that recommendation.

Use a controlled comparison:

  1. Keep the same skill, target, buffs and equipment except for the tested item.
  2. Record several damage rolls or a stable DPS-meter window.
  3. Compare the lowest hits and average DPS, not only the single highest number.
  4. Repeat the test long enough to reduce random variation.

Companion and Damage Balance

The current Companion skill data lists it as a Range/Magic buff requiring Range level 29 and Magic level 29. Its hawk can repeat attacks, while the active buff increases Accuracy and Damage Balance for nearby party members at the cost of MP regeneration.

Check the live skill tooltip for current per-level values before using an old numerical build recommendation.

FAQ

Does Damage Balance increase maximum damage?

Its documented purpose is to raise the lower end of the damage range. Do not treat it as a direct maximum-damage multiplier.

Does Damage Balance affect critical hits?

It changes the underlying damage range rather than critical-hit chance. Critical behavior may still use the resulting damage calculation, so test the complete build rather than assuming the stats are independent.

Can I spend normal stat points on Damage Balance?

The current Player Stats page lists it as a non-assignable attribute. Look for it on equipment, Echoes, skills or other progression bonuses.

Is Damage Balance better than Armor Penetration?

Not universally. Damage Balance improves consistency; Armor Penetration becomes more relevant against defense. Compare them against the content you actually farm or fight.
